This course provides an in-depth overview of setting up and configuring a production web server using Linode or Digital Ocean. Virtual cloud servers have become the industry standard for hosting web applications of all sizes and complexities. This includes small static web pages and dynamic database-based websites that perform thousands of operations simultaneously. No matter the project, Virtual Servers offer a solution that provides web developers with a scalable infrastructure that can easily adapt to changing environments.
The course begins with an overview of the registration process on Linux. From there, students can quickly get started and set up and configure a server with the latest Ubuntu LTS distribution. Students will become familiar with the Linux administrative interface and begin executing basic commands using the web-based remote access console. Next, we'll explore managing remote access with more sophisticated tools like PuTTY for Windows and Terminal for MAC.
Students install and configure a LAMP package (Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PhpMyAdmin) on an Ubuntu server. We show students how to secure the server by disabling SSH authentication, directory privileges, and root user access.
The course explores remote visual desktop configuration using TightVNC and RealVNC.
Once students have mastered server configuration in Linux, we'll look at another major cloud provider: Digital Ocean. This part of the course provides an overview of the digital ocean management board where students will design and build a 'droplet'. We'll explore some of the unique features offered by DigitalOcean, such as floating IP and space storage.
Students learn how to back up, resize, and configure DNS zone files on each of the cloud hosting providers.
